Promising new biological technologies such as Tissue Engineering procedures include the transplantation of functionally active cells within supportive carrier matrices and the controlled application of growth factors to promote the development of new tissue, like cartilage or bone which restores the pathologically altered tissue.

Thus common Tissue Engineering principles focus on these essential components: functionally active cells, which have to be non-immunogenic, easy to achieve and highly responsive to differentiational environmental cues, an appropriate carrier for in vitro differentiation and subsequent transplantation and a set of defined bioactive molecules driving the process of differentiation and maturation.

Through Tissue Engineering we create replacement tissue from autologous cells. We are now already able to successfully replace skin, cartilage and bone with the help of autologous cells. Nevertheless, research and development is continuing. The goal is to offer autologous replacements or biological regeneration for different types of tissue and organs by transfer theory into clinical practice.
